I have to out myself as having never been close to Japan...I know I could easily google this up, but maybe it's even worth a post chez kokochi? What's the difference between Japanese and Western toilets, that they seem to want to line that out so explicitely? :)
*blush*
:)
Mlle A: a "japanese" toilet, in this case refers to a squatter thing, like this:

However when I think "japanese toilet", I think Washlet... ;p
Oh! Oh ..... 。-‿◕。
I didn't know these were traditional in Asia, too. I thought Middle East, France, Russia (just recalled how I had to use one in Russia...).
Thanks Boris for filling in. About the squatting type, for public bathrooms, I much prefer that to the Western types. So much more garbage with those seat covers and all.
When we first moved to Japan when I was in 3rd grade, my grandparents not only had the squat type, but it did not flush, meaning it was basically a nicely covered hole. I somehow got used to that quickly, but now when I think about it, that was rather rare! A few years later, they upgraded to a fancy washlet with 100 buttons and plumbing.
